WOMEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED at SafeSleep United!

SafeSleep United is an overnight women's warming center, providing a safe place for up to ten unsheltered women to sleep at night.
There are over 450 women living on the streets in Marion County at any given time. These women live in survival mode, with ongoing risk of being assaulted, raped, and robbed every day. SafeSleep United offers a safe, warm, secure, place for some of those women to sleep safely at night, build some stability, and access wrap-around supports if they wish to connect to other services.
SafeSleep United is open EVERY night from 7pm to 7am, regardless of weather. We have ten beds available on a first come, first served basis each evening.
It seems easy to fill volunteer positions for the 6pm to 9pm shift, and the 9pm to midnight shift, yet early morning shifts are harder to fill.
So... maybe you are a night owl? Or maybe you are retired and set your own activities and hours? Maybe you experience insomnia, and can't sleep anyway? Maybe you knit, crochet, read, and never have enough time to do those things?
What if you could NOT sleep, AND move your projects forward WHILE you also serve at a women's shelter, doing a few chores, and monitoring dynamics during the mostly slow nights?
What if you could do your projects while you also enable unsheltered women to sleep safely? Come spend your insomnia time with us!
Shift options: Pretend you're hosting a bed and breakfast!
Shift 1: midnight to 4:00 am: Prepare for morning drinks and snacks, inventory supplies, general clean-up along the way, encourage quiet time if guests stay up, spend time with guests who might want companionship or leave them space, depending. Yet it's usually quiet, so bring your books or projects to work on while you are here!
Shift 2: 4:00 am to 8:00 am: General clean-up, organize supplies as needed, encourage quiet time if guests stay up. Then at 6:00 am, wake guests up, sanitize mats and swap bedding, check guests out, call for taxis as needed, close the center for the day. Yet since it's usually quiet till 6am, bring your books or projects to work on while you are here!
Shift 3: 6:00 am to 8:00 am: Wake guests up, sanitize mats, swap bedding, check guests out, call for taxis as needed, close the center for the day.
Shift 4: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm: Prepare for opening, check guests in, show guests around, serve soup and snacks, verify guest property against guest registration, general clean-up along the way, and spend time with guests - listening, playing games, drawing, connecting, building relationships.
Shift 5: 9:00 pm to 11:59 - Serve soup and snacks, general clean-up along the way, encourage quiet time, and spend time with guests - listening, playing games, drawing, connecting, building relationships.
SafeSleep United opened on December 15th, 2019.
Some women have become a core group, and they are building connections with each other - singing together, helping each other with physical and mental health issues, giving up a bed for someone who arrived late, watching each others’ property, celebrating birthdays, sometimes spending daytime together, decorating SafeSleep United together…
So much community-ness happens even amid the inevitable chaos that also happens sometimes.
Amazing things occur when we offer much-needed safety and start conversations with “Welcome!”
