I have a south bend 16/24. Year 1949. It is a cool old lathe. Everything works like it should. It comes with a steady rest, milling attachment, 3 and 4 jaw chucks, tool post grinder, a whole bunch of tooling and so much more. There’s a big shelf unit that goes with it to hold all the equipment. 2 tool boxes full of cutters and other stuff like dial indicators measuring equipment and on and on.
I have gotten allot of use out of it over the past 3 years that I’ve had it. I’m more of a wood than metal worker. So it sits unused for long periods of time taking up much needed space in my garage shop. It’s a big lathe. Over 8 feet long. The original 3 phase motor has been replaced with a 1.5 hp 220 baldor.
This lathe is the perfect candidate for someone looking to restore a south bend. 16/24’s are rare. If you don’t know about them, they are a 16 heave with factory 8 inch riser blocks. I was planning on restoring it myself, but life happens and plans change. I included all the pictures that someone looking for a good south bend to restore would want to see. If you want to see something I didn’t included a photo of just ask me and I’ll send you whatever you want.
541-908-177nine is my cell. Text is best and will get the fastest response. If you call leave a message and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. I check my email at least once a day if you want to email.
This is a heavy machine. You will need a flatbed or in closed trailer with a winch. Don’t think you will be able to put in the bed of your pickup. Cause you can’t. It’s too top heavy. The other option it so take it apart. I have moved it around my garage with a 3 ton floor jack. Pivoting one end at a time. I have some heavy duty dollys so it can be pulled up a ramp into or onto a trailer. Please no calls or texts after 9 pm.
